The Lodge

Join the Lodge

If you have a connection to Charterhouse and have ever been curious about Freemasonry, there is no obligation in simply finding out more. The easiest first step is to join us for dinner.

The Charterhouse Deo Dante Dedi Lodge brings together Old Carthusians, masters and staff of the School, and Brothers of Sutton's Hospital in a friendship that long outlasts schooldays. You need no prior knowledge of Freemasonry, and you need not already be a mason — many of our members were introduced to the Craft through this very Lodge. Whether you left Charterhouse last year or decades ago, you will find familiar ground and a warm welcome.

Fellowship that lasts

A lasting bond with fellow Carthusians of every generation, well beyond your own year group, in good company and good humour.

Tradition, kept alive

Take part in ceremonies and customs reaching back over a century, now in the historic setting of a City livery hall.

A memorable table

Dine after every meeting in long-standing CDDD style — fine wines and liqueurs from the Lodge's own cellar, and traditions best discovered in person.

Purpose and giving

Share in a proud history of charitable giving, supporting causes chosen by the Lodge and by each Master in turn.

Who can join

Membership is open to men of 18 years and over who are Old Carthusians or Masters or Officers of Charterhouse School, Godalming, and to Brothers and Officers of Sutton's Hospital in Charterhouse, London. You are welcome whether you wish to be initiated as a new Mason or, if you are already a Master Mason, to join us from another lodge.

How it works

  1. Get in touch. Send a short note to the Secretary saying a little about your connection to Charterhouse. There is no commitment in asking.
  2. Come and dine. Join us as a guest at one of our dinners, where you can meet the members informally and ask anything you like. Guests and prospective members are always welcome at the table.
  3. Take the next step. If it feels right — and we hope it will — the Secretary will guide you through joining, whether as a new mason or a joining member.

Curious? Start with a conversation.

The Secretary is always glad to answer questions, with no obligation. An introduction over dinner is the best way to see whether the Lodge is for you.

Already a Freemason?

Visiting Brethren are most welcome at our meetings and at the dinner that follows. If you are an Old Carthusian or otherwise eligible and would like to join as a member, or simply to visit, please let the Secretary know.

Interested, but not eligible for this Lodge?

If you are disappointed that you cannot join this Lodge but are interested in joining Freemasonry, our Secretary can point you in the right direction — including, for women, to the Order of Women Freemasons.
